Mel takes 100th wicket as First team defeat Middleton

After 49 years of cricket, Oldham’s own Mel Whittle signed off in style by becoming the first amateur player to take 100 wickets in a single season in the Central Lancashire League.

Needing five more to reach the landmark, heading into the final match, at home to Middleton, the weather made it look doubtful that the game would go ahead. However, a return of 5-41 (his 11th five-for this season) ensured that Mel finished on exactly 100.

The first team reached their target of 103 for just five wickets to ensure that Mel could go out on a high.

The match was followed by a presentation, where friends and well-wishers gathered to say thanks and good luck for the future to an all round top bloke.
